"Great router when flashed with Tomato firmware" 2010-08-27
By Bryan Gibb
I bought this router after extensive research knowing that the functionality, stability and ease of use was greatly enhanced with 3rd party firmware such as DD-WRT and Tomato. Many are happy with the stock firmware, but this is also a very popular router to install 3rd party firmware due to the ease of installation and the feature set available for the price. Since I loaded Tomato on the router, so I have no experience in judging the stock firmware. Loading Tomato is a simple process, I highly recommend it (Find out more at: [...]). The firmware is very well thought out and gives you access to many features are either buried deep in stock firmware or really aren't accessible at all. I have not had any stability problems.

I am unable to comment on wireless N range and speed, but have not had any issue with wireless G. I have read that some people feel the lack of dual band is a huge negative, but most people don't need dual band right now.

With the tomato firmware, I was able to hook up a usb printer and access use the router as a print server which worked well. Some have complained about transfer speeds when plugging in external storage devices, but I haven't tested this for myself yet.

For the price, this router really can't be beat right now.

 "Amazingly intuitive, advanced router" 2010-08-13
By Michael Tiemann (Chapel Hill, NC United States)
We have a coat closet that doubles as a wiring closet, a design flaw that at first looked like a feature. After 10 years we've accumulated a lot of random networking infrastructure as we've connected more and more computers to more and more devices in our house, and the collective heat that's generated doesn't vent very well, so the lifespan of these devices has not been great.

This summer we've suffered more than the usual flakiness, so I decided to do a "deep clean" of the infrastructure, tossing out Netgear, Linksys, and Apple products in favor of the ASUS RT-N16 Wireless-N Gigabit Router and a pair of TrendNet TRENDnet 8-Port Gigabit GREENnet Switch (8 x 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-Negotiation, Auto-MDIX Gigabit Ethernet Ports) TEG-S80DG (Black). The green features of all these units means no power on links that are off, which will go a long way toward solving the problems of heat buildup.

The UI of the ASUS router is surprisingly good, which is to say that I was actually surprised when it was both intuitive and fully functional/useful. The interface provides just the right amount of helpful info about what the various configuration choices are for, and the language of the dialogs is sufficiently precise that I could google for answers very effectively using the keywords provided.

The device promises 300Mbps communications speed, but when I configured it to use the full bandwidth settings and N-only networking, using an Asus USB-N13 ASUS USB-N13 Wireless-N Adapter I never saw more than 8.5MB/sec (about 70Mbps) transfer speed. The documentation explains that there could be conflicts with other wireless networks in the neighborhood that limit my performance, but I'd really like to see at least 12MB/sec (about 100Mbps) before I award a 5th star.

I am very happy that the device uses and supports Linux (one of the reasons I bought it), and compared with the 1- and 2-star reviews I read of various competing devices, I have to say that I have no reservations recommending this device as a first-rate product. If anybody has suggestions for how to break the wireless performance barrier, please do use the comment features to clue me in!

"Works like a champ - easy to install" 2010-08-01
By H. Klein (CA)
I bought this router because of its two USB ports; they let you connect a hard drive and a printer - and they become accessible by everyone on the network. Bottom line: this works just as advertised.

I read comments here from people who couldn't get this to work, so I was skeptical at first. I hooked up the router to the cable modem, fired up my browser and it automatically showed the router login page. At first the router didn't want to connect to the cable modem, but I decided it could be the modem's fault too - so I simply power-cycled it once whith the router remaining ON. Tada! Those two now recognized each other and a few clicks later I was connected to the internet. No cryptic settings or addresses, it just worked.

Hooking up the USB hard disk drive (HDD) was a snap. Just plug it in and after clicking on the suggested "status update" link, the drive showed up on the overview picture (pretty neat). I could immediately start browsing around on the HDD. Then I had to read up on the various access choices (read/write right of the "admin", "family", or whatever,...). Just make the right choice and a few clicks later it's all done.

Finally, I connected my laser printer via USB cable and the router recognized it immediately after turning the printer on. The overview page gave me an address for that printer and it was easy to add this with the WINDOWS standard "Add Printer" procedure.

After all that installation work was done (30 minutes max), I walked over to my wife's Mac, just to find out it had already recognized the USB hard drive on the network. I haven't tested the printer on her Mac yet.

On my laptop, I made sure I now operate my modem at a higher speed setting than when I used my old 802.11b. Signal is stronger throughout my house and backyard and it runs much faster than with the old box (just as expected).

Overall - great product, clear enough software interface, all at a great price.

This thing has a hundred more features I'll likely never try, but for the basic stuff with added HDD and printer - it's excellent.

 "Super Fast P2P Router" 2010-08-01
By X. Chen (NJ, USA)
The router is a little challenging to setup initially, but coming from getting 5-20k/s for months on p2p to 500-1.2MB/s is a big difference on the same file. The speed increase doesn't make any sense other than me changing from a linksys dd-wrt router to this one with stock firmware. Wireless has also been great, getting from poor signal to great signal for my down stairs HTPC was a pleasant surprise.

update: A few days ago I begin to see the max download speed drop to 600k/s, then a few days later 500k/s. Initially I thought it was my computer's fault, but after running speedtest on all of them, it seems the router was at fault. Then I notice the reboot button on the menu. And that fixed everything. Never knew you have to reboot the router once in awhile.

 "Coin Flip Router" 2010-07-30
By 12oz Mouse (South Carolina)
Heads you win and tails you lose. I lost big time with this router. I bought this router based on customer reviews and features, both a which were excellent. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the devise to install. It refused to automatically locate my IP address and then refused to accept it when I entered it manually. Once this happens, there is absolutely nothing you can do. Their website is very difficult to navigate and they make it impossible to ask a question. There's no help line and basically you can't call them on the phone because they are in China. I went through the Help steps on their site, but it reminded me of a cat chasing its own tail.

I have a feeling that this is probably an excellent router. But, if you have a problem, forget it. There is no one to ask and the procedure to ask a tech rep a question is not only frowned upon, (they tell you not to waste their time if you haven't exhausted all other avenues of help) but so difficult to execute that I gave up and returned the item to Amazon.

I had never paid much attention to manufacturers claims about their Help Centers before. But this router has now made it #1 on my list!

Happy ending: I went to Best Buy and bought a NetGear router with basically the same features and was up and running in 10 minutes

"Value for money, nothing fancy" 2010-08-27
By tt (Austin, TX)
I was very confused about getting a good router, considered many options ranging from Linksys to Netgear to Belkin (I previously had a Belkin, it was an epic fail). I found out about Trendnet, it was way cheaper and served my purpose of a normal day-to-day router. It doesn't really have as many functions as a high-end consumer router, but it is well-suited for home usage. If you are running a small business from home, for example, you do not want to get this. My experience with cheap products in the past has almost entirely been bad, but this one has yet to disappoint me. I would predict the longevity of this router to be about a year. All in all, it's good value for the money. Especially if you're just interested in setting up a basic home network with up to 4 devices connected at a time.

I had the original Slingbox A/V unit and decided to add this to connect to my second TIVO box. It was easy to set up and the video streamed to my desktop on my home network was seamless. Have tried it on my smartphone and subject to internet data traffic, this unit works great. I am now able to watch recorded or live video streams on my desktop/laptop from either TIVO HD boxes. Bear in mind this unit is not the HD version. SlingMedia is the premier technology company and have been using their products for the last 4-5 years successfully.

 "Slingbox Rocks!" 2010-08-18
By Dave Smero
I've known about Slingbox for a few years now and was a little hesitant to try it as I've heard mix things about them. I find myself traveling quite often and thought this would be a good way to help pass some time and bring MY favorite TV shows and movies right to my computer on the go.

Slingbox offers a few different boxes based on different setups. This particular box is meant to be used with an existing TV tuner. What this means is that you must have a cable/satellite box as the Slingbox does not have a TV tuner. You can connect the Slingbox through AV cables (included) or digital HD component cables (sold separately). I have not noticed a difference in quality between the two but its good to have both available due to different home theater setups. The Slinbox must have an internet connection for it to work, either a network cable connected to your router or Slingbox offers a powerline adapter which converts a network connection to run over your existing electrical wiring. The Sling Media SlingLink Turbo Powerline Kit ( SL200-100 )is quite expensive though at $118.00.

Once the box is connected to power, audio/video and network the software can be installed on as many PC's as desired. Software installation is easy as you only have to go to the Slingbox website, create an account and install a few browser plugins.

Slingbox just released their mobile player for Android which is absolutely awesome. It will allow you to watch from your Slingbox to any Android powered device, over WI-FI or even 3G! Quality is good but I have noticed some lag/tiling over 3G. The app is available in the market for $29.99 (ouch!).

Pros

- Watch TV from just about anywhere there is an internet connection

- Easy Installation

- No subscription fee

- Mobile clients for smart phones (Blackberry, IPhone, Android)

Cons

- Max resolution of 640x480 which may not look the best on large displays

- One user watching at a time

- 1.5mbit uplink required on broadband connection

Overall I am very pleased with my Slingbox and recommend it to friends and family.

"save money-you may not need to upgrade receiver for use with iphone." 2010-08-13
By Michele Burke
I own the older version of slingbox. It is the AV which I purchased 3 years ago. Home viewing was fine butI was unable to view over the internet. I contacted customer service and they were terrible and I gave up. I recently became interested in the app for the iphone for slingmedia. I read that you had to upgrade your box to the solo in order for this to work with the iphone. I decided before I invest the money I needed to make sure I had my internet viewing options available. I again attempted to contact customer service and to my surprise I realized that they were charging for technical support to the tune of $30! I was outraged. What kind of company does that? After three days and hours of internet research and setting changes I solved my problem and had the option to connect for internet viewing. I really wanted the option to watch tv on my iphone so I reluctantly decided to suck it up and give this greedy company more money and upgrade to a solo. But, first I downloaded the app. and attempted to connect to the slingbox Av and it worked. I feel somewhat vindicated that I didn't have to shell out $150+ for another box. However, I did have to pay $30 for the app. I think it was worth it. I wanted to share this information to anyone who has an AV and was considering the upgrade. Try the app. first with your old model. You may be able save yourself a few bucks instead of giving it out to this greedy company. They should be ashamed.

 "Buyer Beware" 2010-08-28
By BostonTechGuy (Boston, MA USA)
As of August 2010, apparently Slingbox has been doing system upgrades which have made it not only impossible to use the product, but they have also been very slow to respond with any kind of fix for these serious and apparently insurmountable technical problems. Unfortunately it appears at present that it is a 'customer-be-damned' policy that is in effect. Anyone considering purchasing a Slingbox product should think carefully about it and read the user forums on the Sling website before buying anything! Currently there are many, many people all experiencing the same problems with no resolution in site. If they can get these problems fixed, which so far have been going on for almost a month, their product might be worthy of looking at, but at present, tread carefully before spending money!!

"Make sure it is compatible with your cable box" 2010-08-24
By amy s (NJ)
I bought it & set it up in no time......

BUT.......

My cable box is not properly supported. It lists my box, even shows an exact replica of my remote but almost none of the buttons work. It was not a problem with the IR placement because the INFO button worked.

I contacted support, the first agent disconnected me when he asked to put me on hold.

I called back. Spent over 30 minutes with another agent. He eventually remote connected into my laptop to configure my slingbox pro HD. He admitted if for any reason the slingbox was reset, it would lose this setup & I would have to call back again for support. After 90 days they charge for support!

After he manually configured the slingbox for my cable box Comcast Cisco RNG200 - It then displayed a generic remote which was able to change channels etc. But just as he wanted to end the call, I asked him how to play a show that was recorded by on my DVR. He didn't know. He said it SHOULD work and I would have to PLAY with the remote. There is no button on his GENERIC remote to play my recorded shows.

This slingbox doesn't properly support my Cable Box/ DVR so I am returning it.

I called Monsoon about their HAVA Platinum HD. They confirmed that it supports my DVR and that the remote will work so I am buying it. Looks like it is less money too!

"Horrible customer support - expect to pay more to keep it running" 2010-08-17
By P. Deebel (Harleysville PA)
I've owned my Slingbox for 3+ years. I like the fact you do not pay a subscription fee - which makes sense, since you are providing your own content. The problem comes with Slingbox's customer support - or lack thereof... After only 3 months, if you have a problem, they will charge you $30 just to talk to them. If you want to send it in for service, there's another $100. Recently Sling made changes to their firmware, leaving customers in the dark for 2+ weeks. They made a bad firmware download, essentially killing the boxes by preventing them from connecting to the network.

When it works, it is not a bad product. But if (when) it goes down, don't expect any real support, even if you pay for it!
