"Great range - complex set up" 2010-08-25
By russ8128
I purchased this router after my Dlink DIR-655 stopped consistently working after a few years (dropped signals, rebooting, etc.). I saw this router that seemed to have a better range than my Dlink and the ability to use a USB hard drive as a network storage device (haven't tried that yet). I will say that the range is significantly better than the Dlink (they're in the same place), but the setup was very complex and took SIGNIFICANTLY longer than any other router I've ever set up before. The user interface in non-intuitive and caused me to initially set it up without any security (I've since changed it). Overall I'd rate it a 3.5 due to the range and value equation - check prices at they change very often on this device.

"Once you get it up and running, it's amazing." 2010-08-24
By James Brimager (California)
It took me about 2 to 3 hours of messing around with the router to get it working. I have a Comcast phone/internet modem and apparently there are problems with that. But there was a step by step on their site to fix that problem. Then once I got the internet working (it was the biggest problem/hurdle) everything else went smooth. I copied over my wireless settings and I was good to go. I was going to put DD-WRT on it but I read a lot of stuff about the problems people are having with DD-WRT and this router so I just used the default. They even have an easy update feature on the router so you don't have to go through their site trying to find the firmware and then upload it from your computer. You can just do it all from the router.

What I like most about the router.

Super long range- I had a Linksys WRT54GS that would barely reach the rooms only about 40-70 feet behind the router. And if there is anything in the way, forget about it. You're going to get 2 bars. With this router I was able to get 2 bars on my iPhone at the end of our property which is an acre (approx.). I get a full 4/5 bars anywhere in the house where as the Linksys router would get no bars. It's simply amazing.

Other thoughts:

If you want 300mbps you need to set the router to 40Mhz mode.

P.S. I haven't run into the problem everyone seems to have where it switches from 300mbps mode to 150mbps and won't go back until you reset. Everything is working perfectly.

"USB Drive died...and took a memory card with it" 2010-08-23
By Gregory King
This thing is packed with features. Unfortunately, they don't work.

I intended to put a 32gb memory card on the USB port to share data within my network, and access it away from home via Buffalo's web access.

The card must be formatted with XFS file structure to work properly. Use the more common and portable FAT32, and it bogs down to unacceptably slow levels.

Except, after formatting the card...it kept unformatting it. After the third format, it fried the memory controller on the card. AND, after that, the USB features like Torrent wouldn't work at all on the router.

So, not only did it break, but it took a memory card with it that cost more than the router.

Oh, and the touted DD-WRT doesn't have USB support at all, so that wasn't an option.

One last thing...the WEP implementation isn't compatible with other devices. AND you can select multiple SSID's, but all must be encrypted (with different protocols), or none at all. So I was not able to create a seperate network to work with a wifi device which could only use WEP or unencrypted data.

Swing and a miss for Buffalo. High hopes, dashed to bits. Guess I have to wait for Netgear to put these features in one of their models (for twice the price).

 "Nice upgrade from Netgear WGR614 v9!" 2010-08-22
By Matt
I bought this as an update to my Wireless G Netgear Router. Since we have canceled cable, we mainly just use streaming internet video/tv.

This is an Amazon verified purchase, I just wanted to keep my reviews all on this account and my wife had a gift certificate on her account which paid for part of this so we bought it on her account. I just point that out so you know I did in fact get it directly from Amazon.com (not the amazon marketplace)...

My primary internet uses are gaming (PS3) and streaming Hulu Plus and Netflix (via PS3 and Samsung BD-C6800.)

Since the PS3 still uses Wireless G I didn't expect to see much improvement. What surprised me was the direct wired connection through this router vs. my Netgear. I had been using wireless for the PS3 because there was virtually no difference between wired and wireless through the Netgear. This router showed a pretty significant difference (at least enough for me to justify using a wired connection for my PS3 through the Buffalo router.

Typical Download/Upload Speeds for my PS3.

Netgear Wired - 11-13Mbps/1Mbps

Netgear Wireless (10ft. away through a wall) - 11-13Mbps/1Mbps

Buffalo Wired - 13-17Mbps/1Mbps

Buffalo Wireless (10ft. away through a wall) - 12-15Mbps/1Mbps

Now with the Samsung BD player I was expecting a difference because of the new wireless N protocol and sure enough, it was there. The Buffalo router was actually twice (yes really) as fast as my Netgear. My Netgear was only giving me speeds of 2-3Mbps and with this Router I'm actually getting 5-6Mbps. I'm not sure the test utility in the BD player is really that accurate because it feels faster, but in an apples to apples comparison this router doubled my wireless speeds.

Overall, I'm happy with the purchase. I'm eager for Buffalo to roll out the new DD-WRT firmware to see if there are any speed/reliability gains compared to the 1.74 firmware of theirs I'm using now.

If you're looking for a great router around the $100 mark ($[...] from Amazon for me) this is a great buy! Granted, it does not have 5Ghz dualband, but who the eff cares?! There AREN'T any devices that are 5Ghz anyway, at least not a lot of them.
