 "apple products simply work." 2010-08-23

I love airport extremes. I have one at home and another at school. I plugged a 2TB hard drive into the back of this one so it could be a shared drive. It doesn't transfer data to & from the external hard drive all that quickly, but I can't expect it to be as fast as a hard connection.

"Great hardware but what's the deal with the config utility?" 2010-08-14
By G. Mladenov
I bought the Airport Extreme to setup a 5GHz wireless network at home.

There are 20+ wireless networks in range in my apartment, so using a 2.4GHz router was not working for me anymore.

The hardware does its job admirably once it's set up properly.

Setup, however, is made unnecessarily awkward by the poor usability of the Airport Utility software.

The software does provide the needed config options to tweak the wireless network, including manual channel selection, MAC filtering, etc..

But the overall experience of using the software is a big disappointment!

Apple should have hired professionals to do the software, not first-year undergrads interning for them.

Thankfully, though, it's a smooth sailing after the painful experience of setting up Airport Extreme (and in my case Airport Express as well, which I use as a 5GHz client adapter).

Overall, this router deserves its 5-star rating for elegant design, integrated print server capabilities, 5GHz wireless, and trouble-free operation (so far).

"Decent WiFi router for the money." 2010-08-13
By Jim Gerdy (Chicago, IL)
When I recently decided to upgrade to a router supporting a-band I shopped the Apple and Cisco choices. I chose this one because I have mostly Apple equipment. While I have been happy with their computers I consider their routers a moderate struggle to configure. Also the settings are a bit more cryptic (nonstandard) than Cisco's. Nevertheless I wanted the following advantages of this AirPort Extreme

1. Extending the range with Apple's WDS relay and remote options

2. Using iTunes over the AirPort

3. Mounting a drive on the base station (comparably priced Linksys routers don't offer this).

So I went with the AirPort and it satisfies my needs. The a band works fine and the new software / firmware is an incremental improvement over my previous AirPort base stations.

On the bad side I wish configuration were more straightforward. Apple's documentation is sparse and the settings options are, in some cases, not standard. For instance the "multicast rate" selection has low, medium, and high, rather than explicit rates. Some blog searching can tell you how to use the AirPort, but Apple should offer better support.

Also I have not been able to extend the WDS network. My few attempts have failed. I am sure if I dug through more blogs I could get it to work (as I have in the past). But I have established that it is not always easy to do (as some blogs confirm).

Overall I recommend this product. It does what I need, working as a single base station including the a band. I would say it is at a decent price point compared to Cisco and others. As with anything Apple it is no bargain next to the bottom of the line competitors, but feature-per-feature is priced pretty well.

 "Ultimate in reliablity" 2010-08-13

This product is very expensive for what you get, but it is an extremely reliable router which is something nice to have for a change. The "range" isn't fantastic as reported by signal strengths but it seems to stay connected with less problems where other routers would drop packets and even the whole connection while still reporting a strong signal. Works great using an airport express to repeat it's signal to other areas giving them a speed boost and increasing the range.

This router is crazy easy to setup and manage compared to other router configurations. Only downside is you have to have Windows or Mac to run the config software. There is no web administration page, so that means no configuring the router from a Linux box or from a portable device.
