 "A NIGHTMARE indeed!" 2010-08-27
By Adam (Chicago, IL)
I use Windows 7 and have my laptop wirelessly hooked up to the router and cable modem. Every half an hour my wireless connection gets lost, I can troubleshoot it using Windows Diagnostics but it is just incredibly annoying to the point where I am considering throwing this piece of junk out. I tried customer support via phone which is time-consuming and did not get me anywhere. I deeply regret purchasing this product and will NEVER buy anything D-Link!!! In fact, my connection was just lost while writing this review, this is a joke. $50 wasted, lots of frustration, just hope the next router will be better.

 "Great wireless router" 2010-08-23
By April (New Port Richey, FL United States)
I have had a Lynksis wireless router for about 10 years and it worked great, but then my house got struck by lightning and my router and modem were fried. I went to Office Depot and the sale rep highly recommended this one. It costs a lot less than a Lynksis, and was very easy to set up. You just insert the CD and you're well on your way to setting it up, encrypting it, and getting online. Looks great, works great, and is a lot nicer looking and more compact than my Lynksis. Very impressed with it so far.

 "Beware of dropped connections" 2010-08-22
By Mike (Toms River, NJ)
I had owned a D-Link DI-524 for almost 5 years when a terrible power hit took it to electronics heaven, even on a surge protector. I loved that router, slow as it had become, because it had never once dropped my connection. Naturally, I decided to buy another D-Link router. I took it out of the box and set it up within 20 minutes. The included disc was useless to me, as it was just a wizard to get to the router's settings, which you can do easily from Internet Explorer. The speed is very good. My Mac, two laptops, and older desktop PC all detected it fine and connected great.

Then, it began. Constant dropouts! And I mean 1 to 2 times per day. And then, when you try to reconnect, Windows would return the error of "Limited or No Connectivity". Mac OS X and Windows all saw the network, but couldn't get out to the internet. At first I thought I had a setting wrong, but everything seemed configured OK. I checked online and people were having the same problem. The solution I found that seems to be working is setting the router to a fixed channel as opposed to auto detecting one. That's a shame too because I am in an apartment complex, and it should be able to find the best channel considering all the Wi-Fi traffic here. My 5-year old DI-524 did that just fine.

The speed of the wireless connections are very good though. It has no trouble working with my iMac and iPod Touch, as well as simultaneously connected Windows machines. The 524 would sometimes barf over that scenario. It is a pretty good wired router too, although I haven't had the need to test the port forwarding on it.

I don't know if I would purchase the unit again, considering the weeks of frustration my wife and I encountered with the dropouts, but for now, it has survived the return counter and the trash bin.

 "Good budget router" 2010-08-20
By JasonP (Kentucky)
Purchased this router to replace older Linksys router. Setup was extremely easy with included installation CD. Range seems good throughout smaller house, and much faster than G based router. Great price at less than $40, it was $50-$60 at two major retailers. Only complaint, and very minor, is ability to stand on its side. in pictures it shows you can stand router up on end, however I don't see any supporting "feet" and without support seems to tip easily. Not a big deal though, just fine laying flat.

"I've worked in IT for eight years. This router is garbage." 2010-08-20
By Kyler D. Boudreau (los angeles)
I remember the early days of home wireless networking when the SMC Barricade was rated as one of the top performing wireless routers, smoking any Linksys products that existed. This was many years ago.

Recently I started working out of the home office and needed a new wireless router. Purchased the D-Link 615 Hardware Version C as it seemed like a great deal.

This router is a complete piece of wasted electronic circuitry. Unbelievable garbage. At first I had upload speed problems....no big deal. A firmware update from D-Link fixed it. Then my Dell laptop would constantly lose the wireless connection while my Mac Pro would not so I figured it was the laptop and hard wired it in. Now after not even owning the router for a year, all three computers lose Internet connectivity. Even if hard wired into the router. I couldn't believe it. Hopped online and checked out reviews like I should have done and went to the store to get at Linksys E3000 from Cisco. Ah....what a difference. Setup much easier. Features are way better.

I'll never purchase D-Link product again. The tech at my local retail place confirmed that current D-Link products are not all up to par.

It's like going to the top of the Sears Tower and dropping your money off the edge. Don't do it!
