Tis switch works for long time, but it will die port after port (and not all of them at the same time). I have two of them so after detecting that two out of five devices cannot connect to LAn or Internet I decided to troubleshoot everything including cables (and I use Cat. 6 quality cables). The process indicated that it was in fact EG005W that failed. Replacement with identical unit enabled all my computers with lost connectivity.
The switch has always been on surge protector so that would suggests that perhaps some overheating issue or low quality electronic components used for manufacturing cause failure (BTW I am electronics design engineer by original profession so certaing aspects are relaitively well known to me).
Putting it simple, the device is excelllent and until it works it is very reliable, but the quality is not top end and it may fail after some time (e.g. after 3-4 years of continuous use 24x7).

Works fine, modem connects to Airport Extreme Base Station...Base Station to switch for desktop and three laptops when wired access is a must.

Like another reviewer mine went bad in far too short of a time. There's really no excuse for it. Of course there is only a one year warranty, and the folks at lynksys wouldn't even give me a price break on a replacement. So I think I'll be going elsewhere this time.

So I'm reading all these other reviews and I see people complaining about Amazon sending the wrong item, fan noise, LEDs not working correctly, etc. Well I can rest your fears at ease and confirm that I got the item pictured (silver with blue logo) and that it has been working flawlessly for over a year now. Speeds are consistent and it is silent! I've always loved Linksys products since my first WRT54G way back when, and this one continues to fill their shoes. I guess my only complaint would be that because of the small size of the unit, the weight of the connected Ethernet cables tends to pull it away from it's original position on the shelf/table that it's on. But this is the case with many computer accessories now-a-days, so I can't fault them too much for it. I think short of putting a lead block inside these hubs and switches, there's really no way to weigh them down enough to prevent them from moving.
Overall, it's a simple yet great switch that is good for extending your network beyond the 4 computers that most wireless routers allow. I have this connected to my router (Apple Time Capsule) to give access to the wired computers on the second floor of my house and cannot complain at all. I get full speed between computers on both floors, and that's all I can ask for!

Linksys/Cisco is lying to consumers by providing three different products with totally different features and warranty periods, yet describing the products the same model number.
Please permit me to present my credentials: I am a computer systems professional of 15 years and former loyal Linksys customer. I can't use Linksys at work, but at home network/lab uses about a dozen of their products. My setup includes BEFCMU10, BEFW1154, WRT54GS, EZX516W, AS2TNC, BEFSX41, EG1032, WPC54GS, some in duplicate, and a few others not in regular use. Before today I would confidently recommend Linksys products to the numerous relatives, friends, and neighbors who seek my advice. Now that Linksys has engaged in deceptive practices I can no longer recommend their products to anyone.
The problem is that Linksys apparently now uses "version" numbers to designate completely different products. The result is that what you buy might not be what you heard about! Complaints and confusion here on Amazon are caused by these differences. Both the model numbers and the UPC numbers are the same. The products, however, are as different as if from different vendors.
The original (EG005W ver. 1) had a possibly noisy cooling fan, from what I have read, but it has the same form factor of the earlier stackable Linksys series and no other major complaints apart from fan noise.
The EG005W ver. 2 does not have a fan, yet has the same form factor as the earlier stackables. It has 16 LEDs showing power, link/activity, speed, and duplex. The power supply is 12v/2A. It has a TWO year warranty.
The EG005w ver. 3 is a totally different smaller form factor and totally different specifications. In fact, everything is smaller: It has only 6 LEDs, a 12v/.5A power supply, but worst of all, only ONE year warranty.
According to the packaging of both, ver.2 and ver.3 are otherwise technically/specifications identical, but this is insufficient to distinguish versions (or brands for that matter).
In all fairness, I know from my numerous Linksys purchases that they, like other vendors, make incremental improvements to products that merit different version numbers, but not for different model numbers. A great example is the WRT54GS; later versions are pretty impressive yet incremental improvements.
The problem here is that this the three versions are TOTALLY DIFFERENT. Ver3 is hardly more similar to Ver2 than the HP J9077A#ABA, the NETGEAR GS108, or the D-link DGS-2208, notwithstanding number of ports.
So Buyer beware!
